It’s a common myth that writing content for your website is impossible. I hope by the end of this blog, you realise that this simply is not true.
When I worked for my local newspaper, I was surrounded by some pretty spectacular writers. One of these writers described the wonderful world of writing this way: ‘If you write something down… you are a writer.’
Profound right? He recognised, crossing your t’s or dotting your i’s is the last step, not the first. The true first step is to get over procrastinating and pick up the proverbial pencil.
All this to say, let’s not be too hard on ourselves when trying to compile website content. Once you get started, you’ll realise it’s easier than you thought.
5 tips on creating content for your website
1. Set a goal
It is much easier to create content ideas when you have a clear plan.
Some great goals for content compilation are to:
2. Remember who your audience is
While it’s commendable that you started your business in 1976, research shows these are the type of details clients are not interested in. They came to your website because they have a need and you have the answer to that need.
Put yourself in their shoes. Once you have a clear idea of who your audience is, you can better identify what they are looking for.
3. You don’t need to write a novel
This isn’t a school assignment where you must stock up your content with big words and acronyms. If you can say what you need to say in a brief paragraph, then that’s perfect. Even better – break your content up with clear headings, images and even highlight your features and benefits with easy-to-read dot points.
Bottom line – help your customer EASILY find what it is they came looking for.
4. Write first and edit later
The most important thing is to get ideas down on paper and worry about fixing up the mistakes later. Even the most astute writer requires editing and proofing. Editing while writing can break the flow, and often great ideas get lost when details get changed.
5. Record it
If writing is overwhelming, get out your phone and record yourself speaking about your business as you would a customer. You can even use helpful transcription tools for those who have chosen to record instead of write. A transcription application such as HappyScribe or Otter.ai allows you to edit your recording into a usable content.
